Your first guide to Scrum Events/Ceremonies

Scrum events which are also known as Scrum ceremonies are in fact one of the important elements of the agile software delivery process. Precisely, these ceremonies are not just meetings for the sake of having meetings. Instead, they provide a fully functional framework for teams so that they can do work in a structured manner. Though these Scrum events are quite helpful yet they are a little overwhelming to understand.

So in this regard, we are here to help you identify what Scrum events, their purpose, who should attend it, and lastly how to execute them. If interested to become a certified Scrum Master, checkout our PSM practice test and validate your skills.

Sprint Planning:

Sprint planning is the first event in the scrum framework. It is the part where the team determines the product backlog items that they are going to work on during the sprint. Furthermore, the initial plan for completing those particular product backlog items are also discussed.

Purpose:

The purpose of this event is to not only create a sprint backlog but also identify the sprint goal.

Who should be attending it?

The entire Scrum team has to attend it including Product Owner, Development Team and Scrum Master. You might also be interested in What kinds of Businesses demand a Scrum Master?

Tips to execute it:

  • To be able to execute it well, you need to make sure that the product backlog has been ordered and completed by the product owner. All these things have to be done before the sprint planning begins.
  • Push your team to discuss and negotiate all the items related to the sprint goal. In this case, sketching can be of great help.

Daily Scrum:

The daily scrum is a meeting that the team holds on each day of a sprint. These meetings are normally held at the same time and in the same location each day. But if we talk about an ideal time where this meeting can help make the most out of it, then that would be in the morning. It is because holding this meeting in the morning can help set the context for the coming day’s work. Purpose:

The purpose of this daily meeting is to provide the whole scrum team with an opportunity to discuss their progress. Similarly, other important matters like announcing daily commitments, identifying impediments, and more are discussed.

Who should be attending it?

The following people are to be attending this meeting.

  • Development team
  • Scrum master (Even if scrum master is not available, the development team will continue with daily scrum)
  • Product Owner (Optional)
  • Outside stakeholders (optional)

  • If you’re holding the daily scrum remotely, then make sure that everyone who is in the meeting is able to see you clearly.
  • Never let this meeting go any longer than it has to. Meaning, the duration of the meeting shouldn’t be more than 15 minutes.

Sprint Review:

This review is known to be an informal meeting that is held at the end of the sprint. It is that point where the increment is presented that helps to promote collaboration. Also, the customer’s feedback related to the developed product is also obtained.

Purpose:

To showcase the work that has been completed and getting customer’s feedback to inspect and adapt the product.

Who should be attending it?

The whole scrum team (Scrum Master, Product Owner & Development Team) & a mix of different roles are called including:

  • Certain managers
  • Stakeholders
  • Customers

Sprint Retrospective:

The sprint retrospective as explained in the Scrum guide is an opportunity for the Scrum team to inspect themselves. It is after inspecting themselves, they are able to create a plan for improvements to be enacted during the next Scrum. It always occurs after the Sprint Review and before the next Sprint Planning.

Purpose:

To be able to evaluate themselves and point out where they lag and do better in the next sprint.

Who should be attending it?

  • Scrum master
  • Development team
  • Product owner (optional yet recommended)

Tips to execute it:

  • Don’t let anyone in the meeting start playing the blame game. It would ruin the purpose of your meeting.
