Both Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server are very powerful tools and both are used for different purposes. Tableau Server

The first difference is that Tableau Desktop is installed on a laptop or a workstation. While on the other hand, a Tableau Server is installed on a windows server and can only be accessed to users with the help of a web browser.
Tableau Desktop has the most fully-featured development environment and it also allows for data source creation. Tableau Server similar to Tableau Desktop has a web authoring mode and provides security, additional collaboration and scalability features that are not available in Tableau Desktop.
Data sources and metadata can be created only in Tableau Desktop and not in Tableau Server. In Tableau Server, the data sources or metadata can only be published.
In Tableau Desktop, users have the option of creating device-specific layouts for their iPhone, iPad or Android. The option of creating device-specific layouts for Android, iPhone or iPad is not available in Tableau Server.
Tableau Desktop can provide with analytic capabilities. Tableau Server’s web authoring environment doesn’t provide with analytic capabilities.
Tableau Desktop gives users the option of editing their trend lines. Tableau Server doesn’t give users the option of editing their trend lines.
Tableau Desktop provides you with the option of editing the worksheet title by double-clicking on it. In Tableau Server, you don’t have the option of double-clicking on a worksheet title to edit it.
Dashboard actions can be created in Tableau Desktop. Dashboards actions can never be created in Tableau Server.
A Tableau Desktop setup is quite expensive. Tableau Server setup can be very affordable.
Tableau Desktop provides you with a number of editing options. Whereas in Tableau Server, the editing options are very limited.
Dashboards can be published to the Tableau Server but with the help of Tableau Desktop. Tableau Server has this option of sharing the dashboards with others with the help of Tableau Server.
The clients for a Tableau Desktop are small and medium businesses. The users of Tableau Server are medium and large businesses.
Tableau Desktop is an add-on and on-premise software. Whereas a Tableau Server is a standalone and an on-premise cloud SAAS.
