Rafael Irizarry is a professor of Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is also a professor of Biostatistics and Computational Biology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Rafael’s focus for the past 15 years has been on the analysis of genomics data. He is one of the founders of the Bioconductor Project which is an open source and open development software project for the analysis of genomic data. Rafael’s publications on these topics have been highly cited and his software implementations are being downloaded widely.
Rafael also has taught many classes relevant to applied statistics. He is currently interested in leveraging all his knowledge in translational work like diagnostic tools and discovering biomarkers.
Qualification:
- He has a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras. (1989 – 1993)
- He has a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of California, Berkeley. (1993 – 1998)
Achievements:
- He was given the President’s Award by the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) in the year 2009.
- He received the Mortimer Spiegelman Award in the year 2009 which honors an outstanding public health statistician under age 40.
- Moreover, he also won the American Statistical Association Noether Young Scholar Award for the researcher, younger than 35 years of age in 2001.
